Club History
The lacrosse section of the Melbourne Cricket Club was established in season 1896. Cecil L. Murray was elected captain, and the team was runner-up in senior section. Eight members were included in the Victorian team in the inter-colonial matches that year, Cecil Murray throwing a record score of nine goals against N.S.W.
In 1897 the "A" team was runner-up, and the "B: team premiers, and in 1898, 1901 & 1902 the "A" team were premiers. In 1901 representatives in the Victorian team were F. Bainbridge, W.Walsh, D. White, C.R. Handfield, W. Joynt and W. Moulton. In 1902 Cecil Murray threw 14 goals in one game, a record at that time.
By 1904, in nine seasons the "A" team had been premiers three times and runners-up five times. Vernon S. Ransford, the international cricketer and Secretary of the M.C. C. in 1950, gained a place in the senior team in his first season, 1903, and in 1904 was a member of the Victorian team to play South Australia.
In 1905 the club visited Tasmania and defeated representative teams of the Northern and Southern Tasmanian Associations.
1907 was the year of the Canadian visit and A. Box played in the third test, and A. Box and A. H.Dean played for Victoria against the visitors.
After the 1914-18 War, the club resumed in 1920, with Vic. Steet as captain, and G.J. Flood secretary, and in 1921 were senior premiers. The V.L.A. introduced semi-final and finals games in 1922, when the club was runner-up. In 1930 interstate players were A. McIndoe, J.Reid, and N.Robson, with J.Reid as captain. M.C.C. was a very strong and successful club during the 1920's and 1930's.
Activities were again suspended from 1942-45, with most pre-war members retired by 1950, from which team rebuilding commenced. The secretary in 1950 was A. Bamford.
